Dj Fantan was born in 1987 and grew up in the Matapi section of Mbare, attending both primary and secondary school in Mbare. Dj Fantan lost his father at an early age and his mother had take of him alone. In order to make ends meet, Dj Fantan's mother set up a vending stall in front of their flat. He was at times tasked to man the stall and his friends would come to chill with him. The stall was later nick named "chillspot".
In high school, Dj Fantan tried football but that did not work out. While in form two Dj Fantan started learning turntables and Alcatraz Sound took him under their wing. Later on Last Generation Sound took him to their stable. However when he was in form four the financial situation at home became worse such that he was forced to take a job as a cleaner at a fast food outlet. He couldn't balance his time and ended up putting the Djaying on hold.
Fantan later went on to work for fast food outlet for six years and was promoted to become a manager. With the salary he was getting, he managed to get a place of his own at the same block. Because of his new found freedom, many of his friends would come at his place to hang out. Some of them were talented lyricists and would end up free styling while winding up time.
Dj Fantan bought some speakers and micro phones to make the free styles more interesting. The traffic to his bedroom increased and he later on bought more recording equipment turning his bedroom into a recording studio. He decided to call his new studio Chillspot Records a name derived from his mother's vending stall.
Chillspot did not make any significant impact in the industry until after they released “Zimbo Flava Riddim” at the end of 2013. The songs on the riddim included Soul Jah Love’s “Ndongosimudza Musoro”, Ras Pompy’s “Usade Kutamba Neni”, Tocky Vibes’s “Ngoma Dzonaka” and Terminator’s “Any Ting A Any Ting”. The riddim became viral.
Everyone in the music industry wanted now to be associated with Chillspot. They later had to move out as they upgraded the space into a proper studio with a booth and other sophisticated equipment. Dj Fantan believes the managerial skills he acquired while working a formal job have gone a long way in ensuring the longevity and growth of the studio. Dj Fantan was married at the beginning of this year.Source: Sunday Mail
